Product description

The Fyreza Peka Sač Set is a hand-forged 5-piece set made of 3mm carbon steel: pan, ember dome (Sač), ember ring, ember shovel, and tripod. Available in 40 cm (approx. 9 kg), 45 cm (approx. 10 kg), and 50 cm (approx. 11 kg). Cooking is done under embers, in the garden, while camping, or in a fire pit.

The Balkan's Answer to the Dutch Oven

Peka, Sač, Peka pot, Peka pan: it always refers to the same thing. Meat and vegetables go into the shallow pan, the dome goes on top, and embers are placed on the dome. It cooks for two hours from the bottom and top, the meat stays juicy, potatoes and vegetables absorb the juices, and a crust forms on top that no pot can achieve. In Bosnia, Croatia, and Montenegro, this is the Sunday meal.

Unlike a Dutch oven, the Peka is shallow and made of thin steel: it heats up quickly and reacts immediately if you add or remove embers. Lamb, veal, chicken with potatoes, bread, flatbreads. What the Peka can do and how to cook with it is explained on our page All about the Peka.

The 5-piece set

  • Pan, 7 cm high, for meat, vegetables or bread directly over the embers
  • Ember dome (Sač) for heat from above
  • Ember ring, holds the embers on the dome
  • Ember shovel, for adding embers and lifting the dome
  • Tripod, for a secure stand over the fire

Peka or Dutch Oven?

The Dutch oven is a tall cast iron pot for stews and anything liquid. The Peka is shallow and wide, for crusted meat and large gatherings. You can read the detailed comparison in Peka or Dutch Oven? The honest comparison.

What is a Peka (Sač)?

A shallow pan with a domed steel lid. The dish is placed in the pan, covered with the lid, and embers are placed on top of the lid. It cooks from both above and below. In Bosnia, Croatia, and Montenegro, this is the traditional Sunday meal.

What is included in the set?

Five parts: pan, ember lid (Sač), ember ring, ember shovel, and tripod. Everything is made from 3 mm carbon steel, hand-forged.

How does cooking with the Sač work?

Build a fire until you have embers. Place meat, potatoes, and vegetables in the pan, cover with the lid, and place embers on the lid within the ring and a few underneath. After about two hours, everything is cooked, usually without having to lift the lid in between.

Which size is right for me?

40 cm is enough for about 4 people, 45 cm for 6 to 8, 50 cm for larger groups of 8 to 12 people. All three are 3 mm thick and 7 cm high.

What is the difference from a Dutch Oven?

The Dutch Oven is a tall cast-iron pot, good for stews and liquids. The Peka is shallow and made of thin steel: it is faster, reacts immediately to the embers, and the meat develops a crust on top. For many people, it is the better choice.

Can I use the Peka on the stove?

No. The Peka is operated outdoors with wood and charcoal, in a fire pit, in the garden, or on the grill with embers.

Does the set need to be seasoned?

Yes, the pan and the lid, inside and out. Oil thinly, heat until it smokes, let it cool, and repeat two to three times. You can find step-by-step instructions in our blog.

How do I care for the Sač?

After cooking, clean only with warm water and a brush; do not use dish soap. Dry immediately, oil thinly, and store in a dry place. Clean residue off the tripod and accessories with a wire brush.
